What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural function of the mind that allows you to focus on your subconscious awareness. It can feel like falling asleep, but you are still aware of your surroundings.
While in the hypnotic state you tend to be much more responsive to suggestion. Hypnosis can be successfully used for smoking cessation, weight management, reducing pain, stress or fear management, or boosting self esteem, achieving goals, and improving wellness.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes! According to the Mayo Clinic:
‘Hypnosis is considered a safe, complementary and alternative medical treatment. However, hypnosis may not be appropriate in people with severe mental illness.’
While in hypnosis, you remain in control over your body and behavior, you are aware of your surroundings, and will remember what happens during your session.
The Mayo Clinic states that ‘adverse reactions to hypnosis are rare, but may include:
- Headache
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Anxiety or distress
- Creation of false memories’
Who should not use hypnosis?
Hypnosis may not be appropriate for a person who has psychotic symptoms, personality disorders, mental health concerns or serious illness. Consult with your physician or health care professional to see if hypnosis is a safe and complementary treatment for you.
